A chat with top age-grouper Victor Chan
26 July 2011

In this second interview with top age-groupers, Mega Tri spoke with Victor Chan, who is a regular participant in local and regional multisport events. Victor has been performing very well in these races, including several podium finishes in the local 70.3 race. Mega Tri finds out more about this inspiring athlete.

Mega Tri: When did you start racing triathlon and what is the main reason?
Victor: I started participating in triathlons in 1981. I like triathlons because of the variety it offers. It is a challenge to be good in all three disciplines rather than to just focus on one area (running, swimming or cycling). However, I stopped in 1987 when my kids were growing up, to spend more time with them. Training for these races is very time-consuming and the opportunity cost is quality time spent with my children. So I laid off triathlons, biathlons and marathons for about 20 years. Now that my kids are older and working, I have more time on my hand. That’s when I started taking part in these competitions again in 2007.

Mega Tri: What is your most memorable race so far and why?
Victor: I have 2 actually. Langkawi Ironman in 2008. It is my first Ironman race and it was within months of picking up triathlon again. It was a memorable experience pushing my limits, seeing how far I can go. Busselton Ironman 2008.
Months after taking part in the Langkawi Ironman, I took part in the Busselton Ironman at the end of the year. The weather in Western Australia is wonderful and the scenery in busselton was breathtaking. I clocked my personal best at
this Ironman race.

Mega Tri: What is your favorite training?
Victor: I like endurance training. I always enjoy pushing my body to its limits — to see how far I can go. In endurance training, when I am able to meet my target or set a new limit, there comes a great sense of satisfaction.

Mega Tri: What is the best lesson you learn from triathlon?
Victor: The best lesson is on discipline. In triathlon, discipline is crucial. You need to be disciplined in training and preparing for the races.

Mega Tri: Thank you, Victor! We wish you the best in all your races. And see you at our event on 11 September!
Victor: You’re welcomed!

A chat with top age-grouper Ewin Teo
7 July 2011

In a relatively short period of time, Ewin Teo has risen to become one of the best long distance triathletes in Singapore and the region. After recording an impressive series of race results – including clocking 10:15 hour for his debut Ironman in Western Australia (IMWA) in 2010 and coming in 3rd in a recent ultramarathon – he is aiming for greater heights. Ewin will be starting the Mega Tri as a preparation for his other key races, including the IMWA 2011. Mega Tri had a chat with Ewin.

Mega Tri: Would you briefly introduce yourself? How did you get started in triathlon?
Ewin: I was enlisted into the commando unit in 2002. Due to my interest and ambition in adventure and sports, I became a regular in the unit. Being an adrenaline junkie, i was always very impressed with people doing multi sports, adventure race, triathlon, ironman etc. I did my first adventure race (Ace Adventure 04) with a few buddies and we managed to attain 3rd positions without much preparation. We decided to go serious into it, and we won the championship for the same race the year after! I stopped racing after my buddy gave up the sport. I took part in my first triathlon in 2009, after deciding to start doing races on my own. I got serious after racing Aviva 2010 and achieving 4th in my age-group and my result is the best among male triathletes from the SAF. I also did other races such as the Sundown Ultra Marathon 2008 (4th position), Mongolia 100km ultra trail marathon (3rd position), Desaru long distance triathlon and Powerman.

Mega Tri: You have earned a string of impressive race results, starting from the 10:15h in IM Western Australia last year. Recently, you came in 3rd overall in an ultra marathon. What are your main race goals for this year?
Ewin: My main race goal is to improve the timing for my Ironman! This year, I am aiming to do IMWA in a better timing – sub-10 hours!

Mega Tri: How will taking part in the Mega Tri Singapore help you reach these goals?
Ewin: Mega Tri is of a very good distance that is close to ironman distance. I am using this race to get myself prepare for IMWA 2012.

Mega Tri: What is your favourite discipline?
Ewin: My favourite discipline has got to be the run.

Mega Tri: Do you have any training and racing advice for beginner triathletes, especially those hoping to take part in their first Ironman races soon?
Ewin: For those who are taking part in an Ironman – you need to be motivated and disciplined. The process of training for an ironman can be very monotonous and long. There is a lot of mental game that we are talking about here. Most importantly, stay healthy, stay safe and you will see yourself unleash your abilities strongly in an ironman race!

Team Mega Tri wishes Ewin all the best in his races!

A conversation with TriMag Asia Editor-in-Chief, Sarah Wheeler

Mega Tri catches up with Sarah Wheeler to understand the story behind TriMag Asia.

Mega Tri: What are your motivations behind TriMag Asia?

Sarah Wheeler (SW): TriMag Asia was an idea that came to me when I realized Asia is a market that was growing so fast in the sport of triathlon, but we were only able to read articles from import magazines which were not related or helpful for Asian athletes to choose what races to do. A link was missing in Asia with regards to races in the region, who the top athletes are, and I hope that we can be a platform for the Asian Top Age Groupers to get some recognition as well as the Pros in the region.

Mega Tri: What do you think about the development of triathlon in Asia? Many people think that we are lagging behind; do you agree and why?

SW: I don’t think we are lagging behind, events are increasing and awareness of the sport is also growing. I’ve noticed a lot more attention to kids races, which is where we need to focus on the growth of the sport. This is excellent. We have been behind, but with new training facilities opening up in Asia, camps, more events, kids races and workshops for adults, we are heading in the right direction. From us at TMA [TriMag Asia] we also want to see more growth and sharing between countries of knowledge and build the region as the best destination to race and train triathlons.

Mega Tri: I know that you are an avid triathlete. What is the most important lesson that triathlon teaches you, which you are applying to your development of TriMag Asia?

SW: That’s a good question, have fun, train hard and make sure you are doing the sport for passion – we want to have the same feeling with TMA. Put in the hard work but enjoy seeing the sport grow and promote events and people who should be recognized for their efforts.

Mega Tri: What are your visions for TriMag Asia and Asia triathlon?

SW: Our vision is to become the voice of Asian Triathlon, to promote the industry not only in the region but to the international community as well. We would like to have events from India to Dubai listed and to give every Tri community a voice and a place where they can showcase their events.

Thank you, Sarah!

Participating volunteers will gain important knowledge, such as providing proper support at aid stations and coordination with medical response team, from our development program.

For volunteers, this will be a fun and enriching opportunity to discover more about triathlon.

For athletes, this means better race experience, and that all you need to focus on in the race is pursuing your personal records!
